Scriptural Guidance

The Methods and Purpose of Christian Leadership in Business

Have you bought into the cultural lie of our time that says the business entrepreneur's ideal goal is to quickly build a successful enterprise, makes lots of money, and then sell it at its peak to the highest bidder (all those with cash are ‘qualified’), in order to retire while still young and healthy enough to enjoy their well-deserved ‘golden years’ in extended luxury and self-indulgence?  What would have happened if Noah, Abraham, Joshua, Caleb, Esther, Nehemiah, Paul, John and countless other historical Bible heroes had applied this contemporary conventional wisdom?

Let’s look together at how Christ’s Lordship extends to our vocations and the marketplace.  God has gifted us with businesses to manage as stewards, servant leaders and His ambassadors.  He has uniquely called and equipped us to live out our faith with excellence, integrity, fruitfulness and balance…24/7…and has promised to bless those who are called to His purpose!

Listen to these well-known historical leaders, speaking on the context and purpose of Christian leadership…

“If a man cannot be a Christian where he is, he cannot be a Christian anywhere.”
         -Henry W. Beecher

“You must be careful how you walk and where you go, for there are those following you who will set their feet where yours are set.”
         -Robert E. Lee

“Above all else, above all the qualities of leadership, remember the sacredness of the calling that God has given you to lead and to be His witnesses in the world.”
         -Chuck Colson

“I believe that one of the next great moves of God is going to be through believers in the workplace.”
         -Dr. Billy Graham

“…let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
        - Jesus Christ (Mt 5:16)

With Scripture, God has given His special revelation to us in the form of eternal truth, principles, examples and remedies which are effective in business and life.  A bedrock of Biblical principles is formed upon which sound business planning and execution are done (whether practitioners recognize it or not!).  As an example, successful organization development will employ the same basic principles which Christ used in building His church.  Further, God’s Word is very clear regarding our roles and responsibilities, as further defined in each bullet below.

"We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are." - Max DePree
